Partnering to Bring Healing to Seed Effect Members | Seed Effect x Tutapona

At Seed Effect, we believe in holistic empowerment—addressing not just financial stability but also emotional and psychological well-being. Refugees experience incredible trauma and loneliness, and that’s why our partnership with Tutapona is so vital. Tutapona works with refugees in Uganda to overcome the effects of war, violence, and displacement, helping them find healing and hope.

South Sudanese refugees in Uganda face a range of mental health challenges, and there is limited access to mental health services. Some of the most common issues include:

1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Many refugees have witnessed or experienced violence, leading to flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety.

2. Depression – The loss of home, family members, and livelihoods often results in persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and withdrawal from social activities.

3. Anxiety Disorders – Uncertainty about the future, legal status, and basic needs contribute to chronic stress and anxiety.

4. Grief and Loss – Many have lost loved ones, possessions, and their sense of identity, leading to complicated grief.

5. Substance Abuse – Some refugees turn to alcohol or other substances as a coping mechanism for their trauma and stress.

6. Suicidal Thoughts – Feelings of despair and isolation increase the risk of suicidal ideation among refugees.

7. Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Trauma – Women and children, in particular, face heightened risks of abuse, both during displacement and in refugee settlements.

8. Cultural and Social Disconnection – Being in a foreign country with different customs can lead to a loss of cultural identity and a sense of isolation.

In 2023, Tutapona provided direct services to 275 Seed Effect members through their GROW curriculum to help them develop the coping strategies and support they need. The impact of these sessions has been profound:

  • Improved Emotional Well-Being: Members reported better sleep and emotional relief during training and therapeutic sessions.
  • Acts of Love and Support: Participants developed stronger bonds, physically supporting one another in times of need.
  • Enhanced Coping Skills: Members gained valuable knowledge and strategies to overcome stress.
  • Stronger Community Bonds: Groups have fostered a greater sense of belonging, leading to more participation in business initiatives and group activities.
  • Increased Openness: Members now have the courage to share their personal stories, finding strength in their communities.

These profound outcomes are not just reflected in statistics but are vividly brought to life through the personal stories of Tutapona members. Their journeys illustrate how the GROW curriculum has empowered individuals to overcome challenges, build resilience, and foster stronger connections within their communities. For example, Naima Nuru, a member of Alendro’s Savings Group, shared how her life changed after participating in Tutapona’s training. She reflected,

“After the training, I learned to raise my children in a more godly way, with patience and understanding… I am no longer consumed by anger and bitterness. Instead, I feel a deep sense of contentment and a desire to uplift and support those around me.”

Tutapona’s impact reaches far beyond individual transformation—it fosters a deep sense of community and mutual support among its members. Unzia Betty, a member of the Alendro Seed Effect Group in Mokolo West Village, exemplifies this collective care. Pregnant and facing financial challenges while paying for her other children’s school fees, she received unexpected kindness from her group. The Tutapona staff and Seed Effect members mobilized resources to provide clothes for her unborn child. Grateful for their support, Unzia expressed,

“I was not prepared with clothes for my new baby’s arrival but thankfully God worked through my group members, Seed Effect, and Tutapona. As a way to honor Seed Effect, I have named the baby girl Patricia—the name of the Seed Effect Field Officer.”

These stories reflect the heart of Tutapona’s mission: fostering healing, hope, and connection in the lives of those they serve. Whether through individual transformation or collective action, the organization continues to empower people to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.

Expanding Our Reach in 2025

With the support of a generous foundation, Tutapona and Seed Effect are once again partnering to extend their impact. This year, we will focus on:

  • Counseling: Provide direct therapeutic support to 150 additional Seed Effect members.
  • Training: Offer capacity-building training in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support to Seed Effect staff.
  • Certification: Provide tuition assistance for Seed Effect staff to enroll in Tutapona’s Certificate in Trauma & Adversity program.

The journey toward healing and empowerment is not one we take alone. Through partnerships and support, we can continue to transform lives and restore hope.
